The main action of the series begins in September 1959 and ends around May 1961. However, various flashback scenes take place as early as the 1940s, and a series of flashforward scenes in the final season cover various events from late 1961 to mid 2005. Other central characters include Midge's husband Joel, portrayed by Michael Zegen, Midge's parents Rose and Abe, respectively portrayed by Marin Hinkle and Tony Shalhoub, Joel's parents Shirley and Moishe, respectively portrayed by Caroline Aaron and Kevin Pollak, and Midge's talent manager Susie Myerson, portrayed by Alex Borstein. The series also features portrayals of numerous historical figures, most prominently including Lenny Bruce, who is portrayed by Luke Kirby.

The series has received critical acclaim. It won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy in 2017 and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2018, with Sherman-Palladino receiving the awards for Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Writing at the latter ceremony. Brosnahan won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2018 and two consecutive Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy in 2018 and 2019.
