Real person. Astronaut. The first American in space. Gordon Ford Show Guest.
S5E9 - Alan appears as a guest on The Gordon Ford Show on the night that Midge makes her debut. He shares a dressing room with her, and Gordon uses this to insult Midge by greeting Alan very cordially and then immediately greeting Midge much more coldly. Later, as Carol Burnett performs “Shy,” the stage manager arrives to summon Alan, and Midge steals his bag of nuts while he is away.
GORDON: Alan Shepard. An American hero. Thrilled to have you here.
ALAN: Thrilled to be here, Gordon.
GORDON: I see you got our basket.
ALAN: I did. It's big.
GORDON: Well, we wanted you to have a basket that you could see from space. Apologies in advance if there are any jokes about little green men or if the term “thrusters up” gets shouted out at any point during the show tonight.
ALAN: Sign a picture for my wife, and all will be forgiven.

ALAN: Okay, ready. Good luck, Miss.
MIDGE: Thank you. Nice to have you back on Earth.

MIDGE: As much as this night stinks, I really enjoyed Alan Shepard's nuts.
