Trivia

  • The scene involving Lenny Bruce on Steve Allen's show is a recreation of his actual appearance and routine, though here it is cut shorter than the real thing. Several of the bits that were cut in the show version are depicted in earlier episodes at different venues, including the pilot and the season 2 premiere. In real life, the Steve Allen episode aired April 5, 1959, months before it supposedly happens in this show. Copies of the original performance can be found online in various places, including here.
  • The episode won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series - Luke Kirby. (Source: IMDb)
  • At the beginning of his set, Lenny jokes, “Will Elizabeth Taylor become Bar Mitzvah'ed?” This is a real joke that Lenny made on The Steve Allen Show, in reference to actress Elizabeth Taylor. Around the time period of the show, she was constantly in the news because her husband Mike Todd (who was Jewish) had just died, and she famously took up with and married Debbie Reynolds' husband Eddie Fisher (who was also Jewish), and at that point she converted to Judaism. Lenny's joke was playing off the fact that she was a “new Jew,” by conjuring up the absurd mental image of Taylor - one of the top sex symbols of the day - going through a Bat Mitzvah. Quotes & Dialogue

LENNY: That's it. Her future spells a murky gloom. I'll be rich and famous, and she'll be living in a furnished room. But it's gonna be too late. I won't hear her moan. I'll be living in my Nob Hill mansion, rich… and all alone. ♪ All alone. All alone. I'll be rich… But so… all… alone. ♪

MIDGE: I am gonna be all alone for the rest of my life. That's what I just decided in a five-minute phone call. Amazing, isn't it?
JOEL: You don't know that. You don't…
MIDGE: I'm gonna leave really soon. Barely enough time to get packed. Especially the way that I travel. And I don't want to be alone. Not tonight. Tonight - just for tonight - I really need to be with someone who loves me.
